WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

In this security course you’ll learn the skills you need to start a career in the security industry.

Upon your successful completion, you’ll know how to guard or patrol a property, screen people for entry, monitor for inappropriate behaviour, remove persons when necessary, enact conflict resolution, use unarmed defence for both yourself and others, use Workplace Health and Safety, and provide first aid.

You’ll also learn how to correctly handle and use security equipment like hand scanners and two-way radios.

ELIGIBILITY & ENROLMENT

There are no previous academic qualifications needed to enrol for the security course, making it perfect for those just starting out in the industry or who are looking to do so.

There are, however, minimum security training requirements which must be met to enrol, and it is a student’s own responsibility to ensure they meet them. All students must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have a basic level of physical fitness.
  • Possess adequate written and verbal English skills.
  • Have competent literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Bring their own laptop, tablet, or device to class.

At Skills Training College we strongly recommend you undergo a criminal history check before enrolling in a security course. Students may not be eligible to apply for a security license if they have been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the last 10 years or are a “close associate” of criminals.

Those subject to Control Orders, Firearms Prohibition Orders or custodial offences may also not be eligible for licensing. Legislation varies from state to state, so for specific information on disqualifying circumstances please check your state government website.

Security License Information

Upon successful completion of this course you’ll be able to apply for a security licence in your respective state or territory. Each state has its own licensing requirements and regulations which determine which jobs a security licence holder can perform.

While applying for mutual recognition can be used to transfer a licence between states, it’s a good idea to research your state’s requirements to ensure you meet them before you start applying for jobs.

COURSE DELIVERY

This security course uses a blended delivery model, combining an in-person, practical class with independent online learning. 

The online component consists of 26 chapters of multiple-choice questions which we recommend completing first. 

The practical component is full-time and runs over five consecutive days Monday’s at 9am. These in-person sessions are critical for you to gain the security skills and knowledge you need to be successful in your new career path.

Yes, first aid HLTAID011 is a unit of competency within the Cert II Security Operations course and will show on your qualification transcript. We also include HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support. If you require a separate certificate for first aid which includes all three of the above units, there will be a cost of $30 for this document.

Security guards often work in venues serving alcohol or permitting gambling. Consequently, holding Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and/or Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RSG) qualifications can be advantageous.
