WHO NEEDS A FIRST AID COURSE?

First aid is a crucial skill that can enable you to respond effectively during emergencies. Possessing knowledge of first aid can make a significant difference in the outcome of a situation, whether it’s a minor injury or a life-threatening one.

Being aware of first aid allows you to act quickly and confidently in an emergency situation, which can potentially reduce the severity of an injury or even save a life. In some cases, emergency medical services may take time to arrive, and possessing basic first-aid skills can help bridge that gap.

Learning first aid can boost your confidence during emergencies, making you more prepared to assist someone in need, especially if you have children or work in a high-stress environment.

CPR COURSE GAWLER

Officially known as HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, this course aims to teach students the signs of a cardiac emergency and the steps to take to safely respond to one.

CPR is an aspect of first aid, but is its own discipline. It requires its own set of skills and knowledge. This course is for those people who might already know first aid but who do not know CPR, or who can only find the time in their schedule to take a CPR course. Knowing some life-saving skills is better than knowing none at all.

In this course students are taught the seven steps of CPR, mnemonic devices to remember how to perform CPR under duress, and the necessary differences in performing CPR on a child or toddler. After this simple, 90 minute training session, students are awarded with a nationally recognised statement of attainment.

CPR REFRESHER COURSE

According to the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) CPR training should be retaken at least once a year in order for the skills to remain second nature and for the knowledge to remain up-to-date.

Many workplaces respond to this by making regular CPR refresher training a part of their first aid compliance.

ENROLMENT & ELIGIBILITY

Skills Training College’s courses in first aid and CPR have virtually no entry requirements for students. There are no previous academic or professional qualifications necessary to enrol. However, all students must meet the following minimum criteria to enrol in a first aid course:

  • Basic written and verbal English is needed to engage with the course materials and complete the training and assessment activities
  • Students must be at least 14 years of age. Any student under the age of 18 must submit a signed Parental Consent Form at least 48 hours before commencement of training
  • Students require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. If you’ve studied before you may already have one which you can find by searching online.
  • Basic levels of fitness and physical ability

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

While a first aid certificate itself doesn’t have an expiration date, it’s important to note that first aid techniques and guidelines are frequently updated. For this reason, it’s strongly advised to participate in first aid refresher training every three years to ensure your skills and knowledge remain current.

At Skills Training College, we provide refresher courses to make sure your first aid expertise stays current and effective.

Technically, a CPR certificate doesn’t expire. However, regular updates through refresher training are advisable. The Australian Resuscitation Council suggests enrolling in CPR refresher training annually.

In case your first aid certificate gets misplaced or stolen, just contact us. We’ll guide you through the necessary process to obtain a replacement for your first aid training certificate.

Unfortunately, CPR and first aid courses cannot be completed online. These courses demand the acquisition of practical skills, which necessitate in-person, hands-on training and assessment. Therefore, all our first aid training is conducted on-site and cannot be offered through online mediums.

Our training is delivered face-to-face in a classroom environment. While our courses have some online components, the curriculum includes hands-on exercises like performing CPR on a training mannequin.

Assessment in first aid courses is conducted through practical evaluation activities.

Post-training, we assess your knowledge and skills in emergency first aid response. The face-to-face training concludes with a test that evaluates: your proficiency in providing basic emergency life support, understanding and application of first aid techniques, skills in emergency response, and your capability to assist effectively in a realistic first aid scenario. A written test may also be included.

For CPR, the assessment is focused solely on observing your performance of CPR under guided supervision from a qualified first aid trainer.

The importance of learning first aid or CPR extends beyond medical personnel; it’s a skill set that everyone can benefit from. These critical skills can significantly impact life-saving situations.

Apart from health care professionals, first aid training is especially valuable for those in child care roles, including in-home caregivers and educational staff in schools.

Given that emergencies can arise in any setting, including offices, we strongly advocate for workplace first aid training. This not only prepares you to respond effectively in various first aid scenarios but also demonstrates your dedication and commitment to your workplace, potentially aiding in your professional growth. Essentially, first aid and CPR courses are beneficial for all individuals.

Completing CPR is part of a first aid certification. As such, our first aid qualification can be considered further learning from CPR.

Completing an emergency first aid course opens up several avenues of further learning in the field of first aid. Further education opportunities are available in the fields of remote first aid, and first aid for education and care settings. Specific examples include:

  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

  • HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in a remote or isolated site

  • HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid

  • HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy

  • HLTAID016 Manage first aid services and resources

Not all of these qualifications are available through Skills Training College.

Skills Training College offers a broad range of nationally recognised training courses. Apart from first aid, our curriculum extends to include programs in areas such as hospitality, healthcare, security, and construction, among others.
