Responsible service of gambling (RSG)

Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) is an essential qualification for working in the gaming industry in Australia. Gambling can be found in a wide variety of venues, not only casinos but also RSL Clubs, corner pubs, anywhere that gambling can be found requires an RSG to work at.

An RSG course teaches students the importance of promoting responsible gambling practices and ensuring the well-being of individuals engaged in gambling. Working in gambling requires a profound sense of responsibility, empathy, and dedication to become proficient in promoting responsible gambling behaviours. This commitment to maintaining high standards of service begins with obtaining an RSG certification.

We take pride in delivering the best RSG training programs in Australia, ideal for anyone looking to pursue a career in gambling or hospitality. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

“Responsible Service of Gambling” (RSG) focuses on promoting a safe and socially responsible gaming environment. It involves principles and practices to minimize harm, prevent problem gambling, and adhere to legal and ethical standards. Individuals in roles involving alcohol service or gaming often undergo RSG training to understand their responsibilities and contribute to a safer and more enjoyable gaming experience.

Yes. In New South Wales an RSG qualification is known as a Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG).

The ability to provide responsible gambling services is an essential skill for all hospitality personnel who work among gambling activities. People who require an RSG include the licensee, gaming supervisors, and gaming managers, in addition to any front of house staff who directly provide gambling services.

An RSG qualification is necessary to work in gambling services in response to various state and national legislations regarding safe conduct of gambling. An RSG qualification is intended to address both government and community concerns, and the economic costs of problem gambling.

A Provide Responsible Service of Gambling course covers how to implement responsible gambling practices and how to provide information and assistance to customers to minimise the potential harm from gambling. The specific information students will learn varies somewhat between each state and territory, as each region has different gambling legislation which affects what they need to know.

In Australia, the Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) certificate does not expire once obtained, except in New South Wales and ACT. In NSW this competency must be renewed every five years by completing and in ACT it must be renewed every three years through retaking a responsible gambling services course.

No, you won’t need an RSG if you work in a venue which provides gaming services but don’t work as part of a gaming environment yourself. For example, a bartender or waiter in a casino will not require an RSG the same way the gaming attendants will.

However, holding an RSG can still help you in your career. Should your venue ever become short staffed or a customer asks you a gambling related question, by having the knowledge provided to you by an RSG course you’ll be able to step in and assist.

This depends on which state or territory you are working in. In some places, you will require your RSG certificate before beginning work in the gambling industry, and in other locations there is a grace period where you can work in a gambling environment before earning your RSG. Here is a comprehensive breakdown:

  • In New South Wales, Tasmania & Queensland, holding an RCG or RSG is compulsory before commencing a role.

  • In Victoria & South Australia, you have 6 months to earn your RSG certificate after beginning your role.

  • In the Northern Territory, you have 3 months from commencing employment to earn an RSG certification.

  • In Western Australia, you don’t require an RSG certification at all.

No. Unfortunately Skills Training College is not able to offer an online course for RSG training. RSG online training is not possible due to the different legislations in each Australian state, meaning you must attend in person to ensure you receive information on the gambling legislation relevant to you.

A gaming license is a legal permit issued by authorities for individuals or entities engaged in gaming activities. It’s crucial for casinos, online platforms, and similar establishments. Obtaining a gaming license is necessary to comply with regulations, ensuring fair play, consumer protection, and preventing illegal activities in the gaming sector.

A Responsible Service of Gambling qualification is transferable between all states and territories in Australia except for New South Wales. New South Wales requires a separate certification called the Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) certificate.

Gaming machines are present in many hospitality venues in most Australian states and territories. As such, an RSG statement of attainment is especially valuable to anyone seeking a career in the hospitality industry, and other hospitality qualifications are equally as valuable. Among these are:

  • RSA. Responsible Service of Alcohol training is essential to work in any licensed club or licensed venue which serves alcohol. Often such venues will have gambling available, and as such holding an RSA can open even more doors for you.
  • Barista Training. In addition to alcohol, many hospitality venues serve coffee. Taking a barista course can teach you how to make the perfect cup, expanding your hospitality skillset and making you an indispensable part of any hospitality organisation.
  • Security. Venues licensed to provide gambling services and alcohol require a physical security presence to ensure all they’re customers remain safe. Through a security training course you can become a bouncer or security officer at a gaming venue.
