This childcare and education first aid course can be in a classroom or at your workplace. The trainer goes through the course material with the group and you have to answer multiple-choice questions about it. To back up the theory, there are practical demonstrations. But it’s not just show and tell, with you getting hands-on training in using inhalers, EpiPens and defibrillators.
Before you attend the face-to-face training session, you must complete some pre-course reading and a quiz in your own time and at your own pace. We email you the quiz and reading material when you enrol.
Note: Please read the Skills Training College Student Handbook before enrolling.
This course teaches you basic first aid and how to respond in an emergency. To equip you for emergencies, there is training in how to perform CPR. This involves practising on 3 sorts of manikin – adult, child and infant. That is so you get useful and realistic training in the crucial differences between infants and adults. You will also use the manikins to learn about and practise using an AED defibrillator.
Apart from CPR, you will also learn how to to deal with bites and stings. For instance, these days you treat snakebite by putting on a pressure bandage, so we show you how, and get you to try it. The course also covers a range of other bandaging techniques for cuts and burns.
Because of the increase in asthma and allergies in children, the course also deals with these conditions. So you get practical training in the correct use of inhalers and EpiPens. We also explain what your legal obligations are and how to talk to someone during a medical crisis. The following list is just some of what the course touches on:
