What You'll Learn

Enrolling in a Certificate III in Individual Support requires compassion and dignity. During your studies and training you’ll enhance these traits while also learning the practical skills required to tailor support to every patient’s unique needs.

In addition to the above training and study units, students must complete at least 120 hours of work placement to meet their course requirements and receive a Certificate III in Individual Support. 

Eligibility & Enrollment

There are no academic or work requirements required to enrol in a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability). However, there are minimum eligibility requirements all students must first meet. To be eligible, students must:

  • Be at least 16 years old. Students under the age of 18 must submit a signed Parental Consent Form before undertaking any course with Skills Training College.
  • Have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection to complete the at-home portion of the course
  • Possess basic proficiency in written and verbal English to complete study and assessment requirements
  • Possess basic physical fitness to perform manual tasks such as moving patients
  • Students must have a USI number

Course Delivery Method

Skills Training College’s disability courses are provided through a hybrid study mode which combines classroom-based learning, online theoretical readings and study, and practical work placement. All three of these components must be completed within 12 months of one another.

The practical learning sessions begin at 9am and run until 5pm, Monday to Friday. You must attend a minimum of 15 of these sessions over three weeks. During your training, you’ll be exposed to practical support activities, and work with other students to develop your teamwork skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively with each other and with patients.

For the theoretical component, you’ll be required to complete a series of e-readings at home in your own time. To access your readings, you’ll require your own device and an internet connection. The time to complete this section is between 30 and 60 hours approximately, however, the exact length of time depends on each student’s own pace, skill level and commitment.

Finally, you’ll be required to complete at least 120 hours of professional workplace experience in appropriate community settings. You must find and arrange your vocational placement and this must be performed in your own time.

Providing direct client care through established person-centred behaviour often requires patience, empathy, and the ability to provide physical and emotional support.

The work may involve assisting clients with daily activities, implementing care plans, helping support community participation, and promoting independence for people with disabilities. Additionally, the role may require flexibility and the capacity to handle challenging behaviors.

This kind of work is not for everyone. However, for someone truly empathetic and willing to make sacrifices, it is equally rewarding.

If you’re interested in evolving your disability support career through ongoing skills development, further study is a valuable consideration. Healthcare is a diverse industry, and disability support is only one facet; it’s not overly difficult to move into other roles or fields. Some areas of further study include the following:

  • Aged care industry. An aged care course is most similar to a disability support course. Both are completed through a Certificate III in Individual Support, but through alternate elective streams.

  • Manual handling. Healthcare offered requires moving patients safely, a skill taught in a manual handling courses.

  • First aid. First aid provides a wide range of skills useful to disability support positions, as well as all other walks of life. CPR is one such notable skill.

  • A blue card. A working with children check is essential to expanding your healthcare career to work with children. Please note this course is not offered through Skills Training College.

  • A Certificate IV is the next step after a Certificate III level, and there are many opportunities each instructing students with different health skills. An advanced diploma affords similar opportunities. Currently, Skills Training College does not offer any Certificate IV courses in healthcare.

Finding work, work placement, or volunteer opportunities in disability support varies based on your career goals. Online searches can help you identify care facilities where volunteers are in high demand, offering you an entry point into the industry. Practical placement in a facility may lead to volunteer or employment opportunities. Your course trainer may also be able to point you in the right direction for work placement or employment opportunities.

No. While a portion of your disability support course is completed online, practical training is essential for acquiring the required skill sets. As a result, online training or distance learning for this course is not available.

Another reason online training is not possible is because this course requires students to complete work placement in a real world setting. A simulated workplace environment is not an acceptable substitute for actual workplace training.

In some circumstances. If you have previously completed any of the units of competency for this course as part of another qualification and are able to provide us with appropriate evidence you may be not be required to retake those portions of the course. Please contact us to discuss this further, and we can help you determine whether your previous studies are acceptable for recognition of prior learning.

You do not need to take an NDIS worker screening check to enrol in this course. However, certain job roles that will be available to you after completion of your course may require one. Once you’ve received your Certificate III in Individual Support and are ready to start applying for relevant positions, potential future employers should state whether they need an NDIS screening check, or you can reach out to them if you’re not sure.
