The HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support course supersedes HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support.
National Training College is now offering the new nationally recognised training HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support that your workplace requires. The course is often referred to as BELS.
Your First Aid Certificate will include these units of the HLT training package:
- HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support (Formerly HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support)
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Formerly HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

What will you learn in the Provide basic emergency life support NTC Certification Course?
This course will teach you how to perform CPR and respond to life-threatening emergencies. That includes recognising an emergency situation and making sure everything is safe. Since the course is about emergency life support, you will learn when and how to operate a defibrillator. As well as this practical basic emergency life support training, you will learn how to accurately communicate details about incidents. The wider effect of emergencies isn’t ignored either with tips about recognising the psychological impact on yourself and others.
Asthma and Anaphylaxis
Emergency life support is not confined to CPR and defibrillation. That’s why the course includes practical demonstrations of the correct use of ‘puffers’ for asthma. Another common emergency is anaphylaxis. You treat this with an adrenaline injector that people mostly refer to as an EpiPen. So you can deal with this, we train you how to confidently use one.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal academic requirements for these units of competency. However, National Training College screens students according to their ability to:
- Prepare an incident report or provide information for one
- Clearly explain a situation to emergency services
- Understand Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines
Students who fail the LNN assessment can enrol if the trainer endorses them and support strategies are in place.
Physical requirements
Because you have to demonstrate that you can actually perform CPR to get this first aid qualification, you need to have the physical capacity to do it. The first thing you have to be able to do is kneel. There is also performing compressions and ventilations – that’s vigorously pushing the chest and blowing into the casualty’s mouth. The final thing is that you have to sustain that over at least 2 minutes.
The trainer will see if you can do this with an adult manikin on the floor by yourself and also in tandem with a partner. Performing CPR on an infant manikin is not as demanding, but it still requires the strength and balance to compress the manikin on a firm surface for a sustained period.
Additional requirements for International Students:
First, you need to have sufficient English language skills to do the reading and complete the assessment. Next, you must be in a principal course. Finally, you must have a visa that permits a second short course. We strongly advise that you check what your student visa allows you to do by contacting the Department of Home Affairs.
Unique Student Identifier – USI
Because it is a government training course run by an RTO, you need to provide your USI. If you don’t have one, getting one is quick and easy. All you have to do is go to this site and have your driver’s licence or Medicare number.

You will also need to find some time to do some pre-course reading and complete a quiz.

We email your certificate to you on the same day that you successfully complete the course*. The Statement of Attainment for HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support is valid for 3 years, but the CPR course must be refreshed annually. Additionally, you can buy hard copies for a fee of $12 including postage.
